HALIFAX - A spokeswoman for Nova Scotia's premier says the government has worked out a support package to help keep the Bowater Mersey paper mill running.

Jennifer Stewart says Premier Darrell Dexter will give details about the deal Friday during an announcement in Liverpool, N.S., where the financially troubled mill operates.

Mill owners Resolute Forest Products told Dexter they would close the plant without help from the government, concessions from the union and reduced electricity costs.

The mill employs about 300 people and the government estimates that up to 2,000 others in the area would be affected if it closes.

Last month, the union narrowly voted to accept contract concessions and cut 110 full- and part-time jobs in an effort to reduce labour costs.

Union local president Courtney Wentzell says he'll need to know the details of the deal before he can endorse it.
