RCMP are investigating the death of a dog that was allegedly left in a hot car for three hours in Wolfville, N.S.

Police responded to a report of a dig in distress in a parking lot near Acadia University around 3:20 p.m. Sunday.

Police say bystanders smashed a window in the vehicle but it was too late to save the Portuguese Water Dog, who died of heat stroke.

The owner of the dog, a 36-year-old man from Lunenburg, was located nearby.

Police say they are investigating the incident. There is no word on possible charges at this time.

Police are also reminding pet owners not to leave their animals unattended in vehicles, especially during the hot summer months.
