The lodge at one of the Maritimes best-known ski resorts has been destroyed by a major fire.

Fire broke out at Poley Mountain around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Several fire departments responded to the ski resort near Sussex. They battled the blaze for more than three hours but were unable to save the structure.

No one was injured but an employee at a nearby restaurant says the loss will be felt in the community.

“We’re all still in shock. You know, a lot of people have been coming in, you know, talking about it and saying how no one can really believe it,” says Ashley White. “The best thing about a small town is everybody gets together and helps everybody get through it.”

The ski resort, which has 30 trails and five lifts, was set to open for business on Dec. 19.

Losses are expected to be in the millions of dollars.

There is no word on a cause at this time. The provincial fire marshal is helping with the investigation.
