Halifax’s Ashburn Golf Course will host the Web.com Tour, a PGA event with a $650,000 purse and 156 professional golfers competing.
Officials announced the Nova Scotia Open at the Old Ashburn Golf Club Tuesday morning, but the actual event will take place at the new Ashburn, a 7000-yard, par 72 course.
Ashburn was chosen over several other contenders to host the four day open.
“What we look at, fundamentally, is how competitive is the golf course? These are courses that are going to host, as we said, world class players, so primarily, from a competitive standpoint, is the pure golf, the course itself, the quality of holes, is it capable of hosting some of the worlds best players,” says PGA VP Time Benton.
Benton says another factor in the decision was how well a course looks on television.
The Halifax Regional Municipality and the Nova Scotia government are each contributing $300,000.
Ashburn will host the Web.com Tour this year, next year and possibly in 2016.
