Halifax Regional Police are looking for a suspect and warning the public after alleged violent sexual assault in Dartmouth over the weekend.
Police say a 27-year-old woman was walking in a wooded area in the 300 block of Main Street between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday when she was approached from behind by a man she didn’t know.
Police allege the man spun the woman around and violently sexual assaulted her.
“It would imply the worst type of sexual assault that you can probably imagine. It was very violent,” said Const. Carol McIsaac of Halifax Regional Police. “There was a lot of assault and sexual assault involved in the incident.”
Police are calling it a random act, but also a rare one.
"Due to the fact that they're unknown to each other, that's uncommon,” added Const. McIsaac. “As well as it happening in the middle of the afternoon, that's also uncommon."
Police say the woman was treated in hospital.
The suspect is described as a black man with a light complexion, black hair, a clean-shaven face and a pierced ear. He is six-feet tall and weighs 180 pounds, with an average build.
He was wearing a black and white hat, a white T-shirt, black pants and white running shoes at the time of the alleged incident. The suspect was last seen walking towards Mount Edward Road.
