HALIFAX -- Nova Scotia's Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Robert Strang made a big appearance in Halifax on Saturday, but not related to COVID-19.

The provinces top doctor rappelled down The Westin Nova Scotia hotel in downtown Halifax, raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

"It's a really good cause raising money for children with terminal illness or a severe chronic disease, so it's really important," said Strang.

The building Strang and dozens of other Nova Scotians rappelled down is 15-storeys high.

"It will probably be that first step off and once I get over that, it'll be all good," said Strang.

"He's scared… He's just hiding it," said Strang's friend, Krista Snow.

Fully aware of the distance, Strang was happy to watch his friends rappel down first.

"Let them go first, and show the rest of us how it's supposed to be done," said Strang, nervously standing on the roof of the hotel.

"Most people, when they're on the edge they’re very nervous," said David Carhill, who works with Over The Edge. "When they get about 3-feet-down, they start to relax and then they just enjoy the ride."

Strang says while this is his first time rappelling, his experience as a firefighter in British Columbia during his university days makes him no stranger to heights.

"I didn’t rappel down but I have jumped off, 10-feet off the skids of the side of a helicopter," said Strang.

After some lessons, and a bit more nerves it was Strang's turn to make his way back down to ground with Halifax city councillor Steve Streatch by his side.

"I think I was more focused on doing the right things," said Strang.

"It was really stressful. That's my dad, so it was kind of stressful watching him go down," said Emma Strang, Dr. Stang's daughter.

In total, the trip down took Strang about four minutes.

"Once I got in the rhythm, I was okay but I'm glad to be back on ground," said Strang, after his 15-storey rappel.

Strang says he has already surpassed his fundraising efforts of more than $2,500 but plans to keep going.

Anyone who wants to support Strang, along with his teammate Neville Mckay, can donate to the team named Rob and Neville's Dropping Petals with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
