The hockey community in Bedford, Nova Scotia is trying to build a lasting legacy with a scholarship award that has been set-up in memory of Jordan Boyd.
Last August, the 16-year-old budding hockey star collapsed and died during his first skate with the Quebec league's Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
Time still hasn't eased the pain for Steve Boyd and his wife Debbie, but they hope being a part of a committee that will choose each successful applicant will help Jordan’s legacy live on.
“This is a way that we can ensure that Jordan’s memory lives on and always a way for him to continue to touch the community and some of the kids he knew," says Steve Boyd. "And generations of kids after that."
The first of the scholarships will go into effect this following school year and will be offered to hockey playing students from across Nova Scotia.
They’re looking for players who demonstrate a passion for sportsmanship, learning, leadership and community, the same qualities attributed to their son.
"Jordan was a tremendous young man with a terrific smile who touched a lot of people and this scholarship really shows how many people he has touched not only throughout metro, but the province and New Brunswick as well,” says Todd Watson, from the Bedford and District Minor Hockey Association.
“I think he'd obviously be very touched and very flattered by it. But at the same time pretty humble about it,” adds Boyd.
Fundraising will continue to ensure that Jordan Boyd makes a difference in the lives of hockey players for years to come.
The first window for applications closes April 1st.
