The New Brunswick government has announced where the new Moncton High School will be built to replace the old school.

The new school will be built on the city's residential Royal Oaks development site, just off Elmwood Drive.

Right now the school sits just blocks from the city's downtown.

The province says it chose the Royal Oaks site out of more than 20 locations it was considering because it's more central to the schools catchment area, as well as the amount of green space surrounding it for sports fields.

"We'll have the space available for all the amenities, facilities, all the modern needs for students and teachers doing forward," says New Brunswick's Minister of Education, Jody Carr.

Carr says another benefit of having Royal Oaks on board is its commitment to restoring the existing Moncton High School building into a community space.

"We really like the fact there will be a high school on out property because it will obviously give families with kids in elementary or high school a place to send their kids to school, so it's definitely a help to us," says Greg Coleman with Ramspen Mortgage Investment.

The 76-year-old school was closed last fall due to safety concerns. Since then, $2 million has been invested into repairing the school so it could reopen temporarily, before the new school opens in 2013.
