A Fredericton man is facing a number of serious charges after a home invasion and abduction Wednesday night.
Joshua Tootoo, 19, was quiet as he was led into court today, his hands cuffed behind his back.
“He’s been charged with robbery, kidnapping, disguised with intent, breach of an undertaking and breach of probation,” says Const. Danielle Carmichael of the Fredericton Police Force.
Carmichael says Tootoo is accused of breaking into a man’s home in Fredericton and forcing the victim to drive him out of town, while threatening him with a knife.
“They’re all serious charges, not just the kidnapping, but all the charges that I’ve listed,” says Carmichael. “It’s not something you see that often in Fredericton, so it’s definitely a serious file, and we’re continuing with the investigation.”
Tootoo was arrested following a two-vehicle crash on a rural road west of Fredericton late Wednesday night.
Southampton residents rushed to help those involved in the crash, and one man ended up in Dianne Estey’s kitchen.
She was shocked when he told her he had been abducted from his home and forced to drive his armed attacker out of town.
Estey called police, who told her to lock her doors.
“They had got a call just before mine from a home in Nackawic that someone was being held at knifepoint and forced in a car to drive, and then, they said seconds later we got your call.”
Tootoo did not offer a plea today.
He has been remanded into custody and is due to appear in court on April 8.
