A man says he was abducted at knifepoint from his Fredericton home and forced to drive his attacker out of town.

However, things didn’t go according to his captor’s plan.

Residents of Southampton say they were getting ready for bed when they heard a loud ‘crash’ Wednesday night.

“I heard squealing tires, breaking glass, and smashing steel,” says witness Dianne Estey.

She says two cars collided and her husband rushed to help while she called police.

As she was on the phone with a 911 operator, a neighbour brought one of the crash victims into her kitchen.

Estey was stunned by what happened next.

“He said ‘he has a knife and he’s held me at knifepoint and forced me to drive up here from Fredericton,’” says Estey of the man.

The 911 operator told Estey to lock her door and not let anyone else into her home.

Moments earlier, RCMP had been called to a home in nearby Nackawic, where someone was said to have brandished a knife.

When police arrived at the crash scene in Southampton, they arrested a man as he attempted to flee the scene.

“I understand that there was a scuffle, that they brought him out of the car and there was a scuffle, so whether he tried to dart then, I’m not sure,” says Estey.

The man who had been in her kitchen later told police he had been abducted from his Fredericton home by a man wearing a disguise and armed with a knife.

Police confirm a 19-year-old man is in custody.

“We’re looking at a variety of charges, some of which include kidnapping, uttering threats, break and enter, and several others,” says Const. Danielle Carmichael of the Fredericton Police Force.

Police say those involved in the crash suffered only minor injuries.

The suspect is due to appear in court on Friday.
