To the relief of many parents, the Halifax Regional School Board has voted against a motion to reverse plans to build a new high school in Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia.

The future of the proposed school was in the air when board member Sheryl Blumenthal-Harrison put forward a motion to write a letter to Education Minster Karen Casey, requesting that the decision to build a new high school in Eastern Passage be rescinded, suggesting money would be better spent renovating existing schools.

That motion was defeated with a vote of seven-to-three Wednesday evening.

In earlier meetings, parents and students voiced their support for the new school, saying it’s needed for the area.

Parent Lenore Crispe says if the motion hadn’t gone through, she and her family would have moved to another area.

“The issue of soft infrastructure in the community has been something that has plagued on our minds,” said Crispe. “Now it looks like there’s going to be that infrastructure, and we’ll probably stay in the community.”

Cripse adds she believes it’s a step towards the growth of Eastern Passage, and will help attract more businesses to the area.

Three years ago, the province committed 15 million dollars to build the facility.
