HALIFAX -- The Nova Scotia government is giving the SPCA another $100,000 after the agency said it would stop investigating animal cruelty complaints.
Premier Darrell Dexter says the extra funding means the agency will be able to continue investigating cruelty complaints involving domestic animals.
Earlier this month, the SPCA said it would suspend animal cruelty investigations starting April 1 after a request for $100,000 a year from the province to continue the program was turned down.
It said it was getting $3,000 a year from the Agriculture Department to enforce animal cruelty laws.
The Agriculture Department continues to be responsible for inspections and investigations involving farm animals.
The department took over responsibility for farm animals from the SPCA in 2008.
The SPCA says it responded to more than 18,000 complaints of abuse last year and investigated 1,632 cases.
