A father and son have been handed fines for animal cruelty and ordered to pay more than $11,000 in restitution to the Nova Scotia SPCA.

Warren Cain and his son, Makell Cain, were charged under the Animal Protection Act after 25 pit bulls were seized from their property in North Preston, N.S. in October 2015.

Officials said the dogs were housed in an area filled with excrement and no protection from the heat or cold.

After losing an appeal to get the animals back, both men pleaded guilty to failing to provide proper food, water, shelter and exercise for the dogs.

The men were handed fines totaling $2,500 and Warren Cain was given two years to pay back $11,300 to the SPCA.

“I think it’s important for our province to realize that animal cruelty won’t be tolerated in Nova Scotia and the standards of care are very high and people have to adhere to them,” said Joanne Landsburg of the SPCA.

“I mean, if that’s what they say is fair, I guess,” said Makell Cain. “Can’t argue with the law.”

Warren Cain was also handed a lifetime ban from owning dogs, while his son was handed a 15-year ban.

All of the dogs have been adopted by other families.
