HALIFAX - About 80 people protested today against the approval of salmon farms in one of Nova Scotia's most productive lobster fishing bays.

Lobster fishermen that use St. Mary's Bay brought strong-smelling sludge from existing salmon farms in other parts of the province to the protest outside the legislature.

Lobster fisherman Sheldon Dixon says that he believes the farms will create residue that will harm the bay's bottom if the projects proceed.

New Brunswick's Cooke Aquaculture has been given approval for two farms as part of a $150-million expansion in Nova Scotia.

The company plans to stock about 700,000 fish at each of the two sites.

Fisheries Minister Sterling Belliveau says there will be third-party monitoring of the fish farm and the waters will be protected.
