TORONTO - An inquest about a young woman who choked herself to death in prison gets a fresh start today.

And those involved hope it will shed light on the treatment of mentally ill people in custody.

Ashley Smith was 19 when she died at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ontario, nearly five years ago.

The Moncton native spent most of the last year of her life in segregation.

The head of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies says everyone should be concerned about how many young people might become another Ashley Smith.

The first attempt at an inquest was shut down a year ago after various disputes and frequent delays.

Today parties will go before a new coroner to apply for standing at the new inquest.

Julian Falconer, the lawyer for Smith's family, says they are hopeful that this time around they will get answers.
