ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- Newfoundland and Labrador wildlife officials say a Canada lynx that escaped from a nature park near St. John's has been safely returned to its enclosure.

Officials said today on Twitter that the large, wild cat that snuck away from the Salmonier Nature Park was found with the help of conservation officers, and that its roommate at the park was thrilled by the animal's return.

Residents close to the park were asked Wednesday to be on the lookout for the missing lynx.

They said the animal had escaped after a falling tree damaged its large, natural enclosure, and that it wasn't a danger to the public.

The provincial government says lynx are native to Newfoundland and Labrador and that they typically enjoy feasting on the province's abundance of snowshoe hares.

The province says adult cats are about 60 centimetres tall and weigh an average of 7.7 kilograms, but they can be as heavy as 15.8 kilograms.
