Halifax Regional Police say an autopsy has been completed and further testing is needed as they investigate the death of a 19-year-old female student at a Dalhousie University residence.

Police were called to 1246 LeMarchant Street around 3:20 a.m. Friday to assist with a medical-related emergency.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the cause of death is not immediately obvious following the autopsy and further testing is needed.

Police say there is no evidence to suggest foul play at this time, but the investigation is in its early stages.

Investigators have released the scene and the woman’s family has been notified.

Dalhousie University President Richard Florizone released a statement Friday morning, confirming a student had passed away following a medical emergency.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of our student, and with the entire campus community at this difficult time,” he said.

The university says emergency services are on campus and students are encouraged to contact counselling services on the second floor of LeMarchant Place.

"We provided counselling services to our students in residence," said university spokesperson Janet Bryson. "We're open tonight until 10 p.m. for any students that feel that they'd like to come forward."
