There are new warnings from police about Pokémon Go and public safety, after the Halifax Regional Police ticketed a motorist caught attempting to play the game while driving.
Police are advising people playing the app not to do so while operating a motor vehicle, bicycle or skateboard. Police also advise gamers to play in pairs, look where they’re going and warn not to trespass on private property.
While many adults play the game, some parents are making sure their children exercise caution while trying to catch them all.
“When you’re crossing the street, put the phone down,” says Marcus Jamieson, father to nine-year-old Rome. “It’s important to be aware of who’s around you, that you’re not walking into people, objects, and to not go up to strangers.”
The Jamieson parents still have to keep a close eye on the two boys so they don’t wander too far away.
Halifax Regional Police worry they’ll ticket another motorist playing the app soon.
“The Pokémon Go app is new to us in Canada, it’s been in the United States a little bit longer,” says Const. Kristine Fraser. “As it gains popularity, I’m sure there will more incidents.”
Some parents say the Halifax Public Gardens is one of the safer places to play the game, away from the street.
Gardens security staff say they see as many as 400 people a day playing Pokémon Go in the gardens. They just ask the players to stay on the gravel paths.
Wherever people go to playPokémon Go, police are just urging them to stay safe.
