FREDERICTON -- New Brunswick Premier David Alward says now is not the time for his government to intervene in a strike by academic staff at the University of New Brunswick.

Alward says he is encouraging the university administration and the professors, librarians and researchers who went on strike to find a solution collectively.

Picket lines were set up Monday, closing classes at campuses in Fredericton, Saint John, Bathurst and Moncton.

The union that represents the striking workers and the administration are at odds over wages and workload.

Their contract expired June 30.
