St. Thomas University has announced it is cutting its men’s hockey program.
In a release on Monday, the university blames the operating costs of the hockey program, calling it "unsustainable."
The senior administration at the school made the decision, and says it has received support from the board of directors.
The school also says the Atlantic University Sport division is highly competitive, and it takes a significant financial commitment.
STU finished the AUS regular season in last place with a record of 2-25-1.
They haven’t won a championship since 2000-01.
The university says it will save $245,000 annually with the move.
