Military officials say a suspicious package reported near the naval dockyard in Halifax turned out to be a bag of garbage.

Hillary Wright, the assistant base public affairs officer, says a worker found the package in a bus shelter near Rainbow Gate around 7:10 a.m. Thursday.

“He contacted the proper authorities, which dispatched the military police and the EOD team,” said Wright.

“The EOD found it was just a garbage bag with non-explosive materials in it that they disposed of and they found it was no harm to anybody at the base.”

Rainbow Gate was closed for a few hours Thursday morning while the explosive ordinate disposal unit investigated and removed the package.

The gate has since reopened.
