Hundreds of people poured into the village of Tatamagouche, N.S., over the long weekend to raise much-needed funds for the local volunteer fire department.

It’s an event that’s been held in the village on Labour Day for the past 40 years.

“The weekend brings in about $30,000 and we use that money to purchase our trucks and equipment, and just to help us operate,” said Deputy Fire Chief Mark Langille.

Firefighters walked along the parade route selling 50/50 tickets.

On Saturday, they raised money at a giant yard sale and silent auction at the fire hall.

“We need the fire department,” said resident Mary Donaldson. “Everybody needs the fire department. They're very important in this community.

Between the yard sale, silent auction and Monday's parade, the population of Tatamagouche more than doubled over the weekend.

The Heatherbell Pipe band from Pictou gave a festive Scottish air to the celebration. But all along the parade route, the audience was looking forward to their favorites.

“I like watching the little cars, and the horses, and the old cars that they have,” said attendee Anita MacKay.

The sights and sounds attract people from near and far.

“There's just too much here now to see and we like to see it,” said attendee Janet Rolfe.

“I still come early and see everything and see everybody and meet people that you don't see all year. It's great,” said attendee Eileen Cloney Taylor.
