An 18-year-old New Brunswick woman has died after she was struck by an SUV in a construction zone in southeastern Saskatchewan.

RCMP say Ashley Dawn Richards of Lakeside was working as a flag person with a contracted construction company Friday when she was hit on a highway near Midale, southeast of Weyburn.

Richards was taken to hospital in Weyburn, where she was pronounced dead

Police say the accident should serve as a reminder to all motorists.

“Even having one of these is a terrible tragic event, so we really want to advise the public to take proper precautions when you’re going through those construction zones,” says Saskatchewan RCMP Sgt. Paul Dawson. “You should be paying attention all the time when you’re operating a motor vehicle, or any type of vehicle, but particularly when you’re driving through a construction zone, which is in fact someone’s workplace.”

Motorists are required to slow to 60 kilometres an hour when passing workers and equipment in construction zones.

Dawson could not say if speed was a factor in the crash, noting the incident is still under investigation.

However, he did confirm charges are pending against the 44-year-old male driver of the SUV.

An autopsy is scheduled for this week in Regina.
