At least seven people have been displaced by an overnight fire at a four-unit apartment building in Windsor, N.S.

The Red Cross says the fire was reported shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday on Wentworth Road.

Windsor Fire Chief Scott Burgess says the fire spread quickly but that everyone escaped unharmed.

Three other volunteer fire departments assisted Windsor Fire at the scene. Burgess says the age of the home and extreme weather conditions made it difficult for crews battling the blaze.

He also says the house appears to be a total loss.

Two adjacent structures, including a home next door and the Windsor House assisted-living complex, were also evacuated as a precaution, but did not sustain significant damage.

Evacuees were initially taken to a church hall across the street. Windsor House residents have since been moved to a motel until the fire scene is cleared and any smoke that permeated the building can be ventilated.

The Red Cross is assisting residents with lodging and emergency purchases, such as food and clothing.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
