Police say two teens have been arrested after a student in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley received a threatening text message.
Just before noon, Kings District RCMP received a report that a student at Central Kings Rural High School in Cambridge, N.S. had received a threatening text from another person.
The school and adjacent Cambridge Elementary were immediately locked down by school officials as a safety precaution.
“They made us all go to classrooms since basically before 12 p.m. and then were stuck in there until 2 p.m. We were bored out of our minds,” says student Malachi DeLorey.
Students and parents say rumours about men with guns quickly spread throughout the school. Joanne Desroches says her daughter texted her updates throughout the day.
“They said there’s a real lockdown and there’s guys that have guns, now, that’s what my daughter just said,” says Desroches.
RCMP and a K9 unit responded to the scene. The lockdown ended and classes resumed once police determined there was no threat inside the schools.
Officers arrested two teens in connection with the case. Police won’t say whether weapons were involved, or where the teens were arrested, but they do say they weren’t anywhere near the school at the time.
They also say it is too early to determine whether criminal charges will be laid.
“There was a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, young persons, and basically, I believe one is from the Aylesford area and the other one may be from the Kingston area,” says Nova Scotia RCMP Sgt. Allain LeBlanc.
Students at both schools were dismissed at the regular time.
