A filmmaker from Massachusetts has raised enough money to proceed with a documentary about a Maritime university student who disappeared 21 years ago.

Allan Kenley Matheson was two weeks into his first semester at Acadia University when he disappeared without a trace in September 1992.

Matheson was 20 years old and lived on campus in Crowell Tower at the time. His sister also attended Acadia University and was one of the last people to see him, on a Sunday afternoon.

It was reported that one of Matheson’s friends saw him walking along Main Street the following day. That was the last time anyone saw or heard from him and his bank account has never been touched.

No one seems to have any idea what may have happened to the young man from Cape Breton. His disappearance is being treated as a missing persons case and was added to Nova Scotia’s Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes program last year.

The mystery has always intrigued U.S. filmmaker Ron Lamothe, who launched an online crowdfunding campaign to bring the documentary to life.

Lamothe needed to raise $78,000 in 30 days to proceed with the project. He says $36,000 came in in the final 48 hours, exceeding his funding goal.

The documentary received a total of 338 backers. He hopes to begin the project in the spring.
