A woman is facing charges, including manslaughter, after a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run collision in Truro, N.S., last June.

The Truro Police Service said the man was hit by a vehicle at the intersection of King Street and Duke Street around 1:18 a.m. on June 28, 2024. He was identified as 40-year-old John William MacDonell.

Investigators seized the vehicle, a black 2014 Hyundai Elantra, at the time.

Truro Police Chief Dave MacNeil told CTV News they arranged for the accused to turn herself in Thursday morning following a “lengthy and complex investigation.”

Rishonda Raquel Beals, 26, from Dartmouth, N.S., is facing the following charges:

  • manslaughter
  • failure to remain at the scene of an accident causing death
  • dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death
  • public mischief

“Our investigators worked tirelessly to gather the technical and forensic evidence to support the laying of these charges, and we hope that this arrest will bring some comfort to John’s family,” said MacNeil in a news release.

Beals made her first court appearance Thursday afternoon. She was released on conditions and is due back in Truro provincial court on Feb. 12.
