Police in Saint John say the body of Genevieve Cormier has been found on a secluded beach on the city’s east side.

Officers were called to the beach near the Anthony’s Cove Road on Saturday after someone walking a dog discovered the body.

Police have positively identified the body as that of Cormier, a 19-year-old Saint John woman who was reported missing on Sept. 29.

Her body was taken to the Saint John Regional Hospital where a full medical review, including an autopsy, will be performed.

Police are not speculating about how her body ended up on the beach but say it appears it had been in the water for quite some time.

“It has been known as a place where things wash ashore. The currents do seem to push items that way,” says Saint John Police Sgt. Jay Henderson. “At this time, I cannot confirm that foul play has been ruled out.”

Henderson says police are waiting to hear back from the pathologist before confirming a cause of death.

“We want to rule out any type of trauma that’s been done to the body and also, we’re waiting on the toxicology report,” he says.

Police hope to have the results back within a few days.

The last confirmed sighting of the teen was in the parking lot of the Reversing Falls on Saint John’s west side. Several extensive searches were conducted in the area in the weeks following her disappearance.

The area where Cormier’s body was found is roughly 14 kilometres from the Reversing Falls.

“I’m glad there’s closure and I’m really sad for the family,” says Sherry Vallieres, a friend of the family.

Police say her family has been notified and is asking for privacy.
