A 16-year-old boy is facing several charges in connection with a fire at a home in Dartmouth, N.S.

Stephen Heartz says he was watching TV with his children when he heard someone trying to climb in through his living room window.

“I pulled the blinds up and I looked out and I seen a young guy…and I said ‘what are you doing?” He had a shocked look on his face and he reached down, he picked up a backpack, and he left,” says Heartz.

Heartz called the police and then noticed smoke coming from a storage room in his home. He quickly got his children out of the home and went across the street.

Fire crews arrived at the scene and extinguished the flames, but the building sustained serious damage. No one was seriously injured.

Officers arrived at the subdivided home in the 300 block of Portland Street around 5 p.m. and arrested a teen in the area.

He is facing charges of break and enter, arson and violation of probation.
