Church officials at Saint Mary's Cathedral Basilica are concerned about new cracks that are developing and old ones that are expanding at the base of the steeple on the Halifax landmark.
Aurea Sadi, spokeswoman for the Halifax – Yarmouth Archdiocese, says the cracks were first discovered in February by the property superintendent.
Now, the church’s insurance company has asked a structural engineer to investigate the cause.
“To try and find the ways, that either externally, or whether or not the building itself, because of its age and its shifting, whether or not perhaps some of the blasting that is going on downtown is causing more shifting, or faster shifting than a building its age might see,” says Sadi.
The blasting Sadi refers to is taking place a few blocks away at the construction site of the $500-million Nova Centre.
However, she says the cause hasn’t yet been pinpointed, and there is no specific date for the report to be completed.
She says there is nothing at risk and the Basilica is open for worship.
