Yarmouth, N.S. residents have celebrated life by the sea for the past 35 years with an annual festival called Seafest.

Involvement from residents like Linda Deveau is essential when putting together an annual event like Seafest. Linda has spent the last 25 years as the chair of the Seafest pageant.

“It’s fun, it’s a great group of people,” says Linda. “It’s a great community, why not be involved? Getting involved puts me in the middle of where the action is.”

The 51-year-old is scaling back her involvement and passing the torch but Seafest president Don Smith says whoever replaces Linda will have big shoes to fill.

“She’s a big part, everybody knows her around town. Everybody can talk to her,” says Don.

Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood agrees.

“She’s a wonderful ambassador,” says Pam. “She’s positive, she’s upbeat, she has a great way of drawing people in and that’s what we need, because when she steps up, people step up as well.”

Linda says no matter what you’re good at, everyone should step up and volunteer in their community.

“People need to roll up their sleeves,” says Linda. “It doesn’t matter if you have an hour to give or a year to give, everyone has skills to bring to the table.”

Congratulations to Linda Deveau, our Maritimer of the Week!
