Mark Healy says his experience as a survivor of prostate cancer has awakened a passion to raise money for cancer research and to educate and provide support for others with the disease.

Employees and volunteers with Prostate Cancer Canada say Healy has been an inspiration in fundraising and awareness efforts year-round.

“He puts a lot of time and energy and creates a positive outlook for everybody, and to let them know that this is something that can be defeated,” says volunteer Karen Cooper.

Healy says his best moments are when people respond with e-mails and phone calls after he has given a talk at a public event.

“Telling me that they were motivated by my talk and they've gone and got checked, and they're all clear, that to me is the rewarding part of this," he says.

He says his message is not just for middle-aged men; it’s also for women, and it’s a message his wife Gina has heard loud and clear.

“Women are the caregivers and that extends to their husbands usually, so they make the appointments, and sometimes they have to drag their husbands there, but it is an important role," she says.

Congratulations to Mark Healy, our Maritimer of the Week!
