HALIFAX -- Programs to help troubled youth in Nova Scotia are getting $225,000 from the provincial government to hire five new outreach workers in Dartmouth, Truro, Kentville, Whitney Pier and East Preston.
Another $25,000 will go to the Educational Program Innovations Charity in Sydney.
The government says the position being created in East Preston as part of the Youth Outreach Program will mark the first time an outreach worker has been hired in an African-Nova Scotian community.
Outreach workers help young people who might be having social, emotional, economic and family challenges.
This brings the total number of youth outreach workers in the province to 13.
The grant for the youth peer centre in Sydney will be used to recruit and train volunteers, as well as fund a study on the program's impact.
