A 19-year-old man is dead and two people are injured after a garbage truck collided head-on with a pickup truck in Maugerville, N.B. Monday morning.

Police say the accident happened on Route 105 around 9:20 a.m. Maugerville is located about 22 kilometres southeast of Fredericton.

The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. His name hasn’t been released but police say he was from Onslow, N.S.

“The passenger of the pick-up truck and the driver of the garbage truck were taken to hospital with what we believe to be non-life threatening injuries,” says Staff Sergeant James Bates with the New Brunswick RCMP.

Police say occupants of the red truck were travelling from Nova Scotia to the University of New Brunswick, in Fredericton, to do work on campus.

“There were indications that two vehicles were travelling together for those work purposes,” explains Staff Sergeant Bates.

Collision reconstructionists were on the scene for most of the day, trying to piece together exactly what happened.

“It’s a shame, especially young people around Christmas time,” says one bystander.

“Sounds pretty sad, for Christmas,” adds another.

RCMP say the incident remains under investigation.
