HALIFAX -- Hundreds of electronic versions of books written by Atlantic Canadians have been added to Nova Scotia's public library system.

Culture and Heritage Minister Tony Ince says the Nova Scotia Provincial Library, Halifax Public Libraries and the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association worked together to offer more e-books to public library users.

Ince says the Read Local program will make it easier for Nova Scotians to borrow Atlantic Canadian books from anywhere they can access the Internet.

The program involves agreements with 12 regional publishers who produced 600 new e-books, including fiction and non-fiction titles.

The new titles, like all e-books in Nova Scotia's public library system, are available to anyone with a library card and access to the Internet.

Citing a study from Booknet Canada, the provincial government says about 17 per cent of books sold in Canada in 2013 were e-books.
