Halifax Police are looking for the Grinch who stole Christmas from a Dartmouth home last week, with the help of some modern technology.

Last Thursday morning, a man broke into a home and spent eight minutes picking and choosing what to steal.

Jewelry, high-tech computer equipment and collectible coins were some of the items the thief was able to cross-off his ill-gotten wish list.

But what the thief didn’t know was that he was caught on camera, or in this case, a home surveillance system, which has allowed police to get a very good look at him.

“People are sharing it, we already received over a dozen tips as to who this individual could be,” explains Halifax Regional Police Constable Pierre Bourdages. “No arrests yet, but it looks promising.”

The break-in happened at a home on Athorpe Drive.

CTV News spoke with the homeowners, who say the total amount of goods stolen adds up to over five thousand dollars.

Lower Sackville resident Paul Bowden know all too well what it’s like to have Christmas de-railed by thieves.

Last week his home was a finalist in a local decorating contest.

“I live right next to a school,” says Bowden. “Everybody in the community walks by all the time during Christmas time and actually appreciates the work being done.”

Over the weekend, someone swiped two of his illuminated reindeer, a small statue and a memorial angel.

“The lady that lives across the street, her mom passed away this time of year,” explains Bowden. “What I did was literally, lit that angel every day until close to the passing.”

Adding insult to injury, the culprit or culprits punctured and destroyed several inflatable characters.

But just like in the Dr. Seuss story, the Grinch wasn’t able to steal the Christmas spirit.

“For me, I’ll be bigger and better next year,” exclaims Bowden. “You’re not going to stop me.”

Bowden still hopes those responsible will do the right thing and bring his holiday items back before Christmas.
