Abortion-rights supporters have launched a campaign to keep Fredericton’s Morgentaler Clinic open.
Members of Reproductive Justice New Brunswick are trying to raise $100,000 before Aug. 1 in the hopes of leasing the abortion clinic.
The group hasn’t said what they would use the clinic for, but that Friday’s announcement is just a starting point.
“Right now, we’re just looking into the specifics of how the lease agreement will work and, obviously, looking into health-care professional availability,” says Kathleen Pye of Reproductive Justice New Brunswick.
“It’s really hard to say for sure when things will be started, we really don’t know, but right now we’re just taking those first efforts to look into the process.”
The group plans to use crowdfunding, which is mostly done on the Internet and involves collecting small amounts of money from large numbers of people.
Management at the Morgentaler Clinic announced the closure earlier this year, citing mounting costs and a lack of government funding.
The clinic is scheduled to close on July 18.
