SACKVILLE, N.B. - Mount Allison University is urging striking academic staff to accept its offer to enter into binding arbitration so students can get back into the classroom.

University provost Karen Grant says the union had rejected the offer on Friday, but the proposal remains on the table.

Grant says the university has presented contract proposals that are fair and consistent with recent collective agreements at other universities.

She says it has been negotiating with the union for eight months and it's apparent the parties will not agree on a new collective agreement at the bargaining table.

The Mount Allison Faculty Association, which represents 154 full-time and 56 part-time faculty and librarians, has proposed bringing in a special mediator from outside the province to help settle the dispute.

Grant says the university would consider the union's proposal if staff agreed to stop striking and head back into the classroom.

Mount Allison says its 2,400 students have now missed two weeks of class.
