The RCMP has identified the bodies of two men found in a Moncton apartment, although they are not releasing their names at this time.

Police visited the apartment on MacAleese Avenue Sunday morning in the hopes of locating a man who had been reported missing Friday.

Investigators say the man didn’t live there but was known to frequent the apartment.

“We went there to check as part of our missing person investigation,” says Codiac RCMP Staff Sgt. Maurice Comeau.

The officers knocked on the door but there was no answer. They knew something was wrong when they smelled a strange odour coming from the apartment.

“We were able to take a peak in the apartment under the door and that’s when we noticed there was somebody lying on the floor and after that we gained entry and found the two deceased males in the apartment,” says Comeau.

“One guy who lives in the building told us the smell was unbearable,” says area resident Ron Cormier. “What I could tell you about this neighbourhood, like, this neighbourhood, I’ve never seen it violent, never.”

Police say the bodies have been identified as a 29-year-old man and a 36-year-old man, both from Moncton.

“The 36-year-old lived in that apartment and the missing person we were looking for that we found there did not live in that apartment,” says Comeau.

Their names are not being released at this time, pending notification of their families.

Residents say a police officer was stationed outside the apartment all night and that the police presence in the building is somewhat of a relief, but they will feel better once they know what happened.

Police say the cause of their deaths remains under investigation and foul play has not been ruled out. Investigators are awaiting autopsy results.
