There were some very anxious moments for a family in the Saint John area Monday night.

Police were called after a boy discovered a vintage hand grenade on Mispec Beach.

The young man was playing with the device when his grandfather noticed, and recognized the threat.

Saint John Police called in the bomb squad from CFB Gagetown.

The base confirms to CTV News they were called around 9:30 p.m. to deal with a No. 36 hand grenade, commonly used in the Second World War.

Squad members collected the device and took it back to the base for disposal.

Mispec Beach is located on the coastline of the Bay of Fundy, minutes from the city centre.

According to at least one website, the beach was used as a recreational site by the military in the Second World War.
