A Dartmouth man has just released a T-shirt design with a cutting edge slogan that is stirring up controversy in some parts of the city.

Kurtis Worth says the T-shirt, which reads “I went to Dartmouth and all I got was stabbed,” isn’t meant to be offensive.

He says it’s meant to draw attention to a disturbing trend in the Dartmouth area – one that has affected him directly.

“Most recently, it was my uncle that was stabbed multiple times outside of Parkside,” says the Halifax-based tattoo artist. “He was leaving the bar and some young guy stabbed him multiple times, sent him to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Luckily, he lived.”

There were three separate stabbings in the Dartmouth area this past week – one in Cole Harbour and two in Dartmouth’s north end.

In one incident, a 21-year-old man was stabbed after he stopped to help a 21-year-old woman who was being assaulted.

But some Halifax-area residents say the T-shirt just isn’t funny.

“I think we better deal with the issue that’s over there. It’s a serious issue,” says one area resident.

“My husband’s from Dartmouth so I don’t think it’s funny,” says another.

But not everyone feels that way. Since Worth posted his design on Facebook, it has received hundreds of ‘likes’ and plenty of positive comments.

He says he’s not concerned about those who don’t like his design.

“There’s always going to be someone offended,” says Worth. “There’s nothing I can do to prevent that.”

Meanwhile, he plans to continue working on new T-shirt designs – ones he says will be just as provocative as his first.
