With new teams in town and a week of games still ahead, the FIFA Women’s World Cup is in full-swing in Moncton, and local businesses say it has them busy in the best way.

The event’s economic impact for the city and the province is expected to be substantial, says Stéphane Delisle, FIFA’s venue manager for Moncton.

“It’s estimated that the FIFA Women's World Cup is going to bring roughly $40 million in economic impact to the province of New Brunswick and $27 million of that is roughly going to come back to Greater Moncton,” Delisle said.

Andrew Innes, assistant manager of Moncton’s iconic Pumphouse Brewery, says their establishment has seen a huge increase in business since the games began.

“We are seeing it a lot more now during the week. We are seeing later rushes, “ Innes said.

“There is evidence everywhere of bigger sales and when there is bigger sales everyone is kind of happy,” he said.

Many pubs, restaurants, retailers and hotels are reporting the same: moolah moving into Moncton.

Assistant manager Leslie Belliveau says her Guacamole Mexican restaurant on Mountain Road has had to beef up its staffing schedule following each of the games.

“Sometimes we have to call people in, not that we are short-staffed but just to have that extra hand, because it gets really crazy,” Belliveau said.

In what could be good news for the sport as well as sales, soccer jerseys and cleats are reportedly flying off the shelves of Moncton’s Cleve’s Source for Sports.

“We are seeing a lot of customers coming in wanting to get into the sport of soccer by seeing the games live and on TV,” said Cleve’s manager Troy MacMillan.

Hotels, too, are reporting an uptick in action associated with the FIFA tournament.

“We have been getting lots of walk-ins, lots of reservations. We have been filling up the last couple of days as well, because of the Women's World Cup,” said hotel employee Sharlie Lemieux.

With three more games scheduled to take place in Moncton through to June 21, local businesses hope to enjoy the economic boon for at least another week.

The next kick off is between Norway and Côte d’Ivoire on Monday at 5 p.m. in Moncton Stadium.

On Sunday, two Group B teams — Brazil and Costa Rica — arrived in town, receiving a warm welcome at the airport ahead of their match on Wednesday.
