A crash Friday morning along a popular stretch of Fredericton’s downtown has left behind many unanswered questions.

Police and emergency crews responded to a report that a vehicle had gone off the road on the green off St. Anne's Point Drive shortly before 4 a.m.

Some wonder if the single-vehicle crash should be treated as a missing person’s case – since the second occupant of the car has not been seen since.

“When the vehicle left the road, there was a rock that hit it,” says Brian Ford of Fredericton Police’s Major Crimes Unit. “It looks like it may have hit a lamp post and a tree.”

The black Mazda landed on its side, never going into the St. John River, but coming close. It settled on what’s called “the green” - a popular area with a trail that runs parallel to the busy bypass known as St. Anne’s Point Drive.

One of the car occupants, a man, went to hospital with minor injuries. He was released this morning.

Police believe there was a second person in the car – but they can’t find her.

“At this time we have information that there may have been more than one person in the vehicle,” says Ford.

While Fredericton Police didn’t say much, the scene was very active for much of the day. Around 8:30 a.m., the underwater recovery team dispatched into the river.

The underwater team pulled out of the river mid-day, but returned around 3p.m.

Family and friends of the young woman watched as the divers returned to the water. Locals also stopped at the scene.

“It gives people a little wake-up call,” says a local, Rick Aubin. “To say ‘you know, I need to slow down a little or pay more attention.’”

There was also person of interest connected to the case. The police looked for a male in a photo that they displayed to people in hopes of identifying the man, but later deemed him as “just a person of interest.”

They won’t say why they wanted to talk to him – saying this isn’t a ‘missing persons’ case.

“This is a single motor vehiclethat occurred in the early morning hours,” says Ford.

He did say they have spoken to the man involved, but say they would not comment further. Ford says they have a lot of work left to do in this investigation.
