The death of a young Canadian soldier at CFB Gagetown is hitting a Moncton-area community hard, and leaving Moriah Nickerson clinging to memories of her friend.

Pte. Samuel Nadeau died while training at CFB Gagetown in Oromocto, N.B., on Monday.

“It was always to try to improve your life. He would always want to help you see life a little bit better,” Nickerson said of her friend.

The 17-year-old reserve solder from Memramcook, N.B., had just joined the Canadian Forces in January.

Nickerson says she hopes he is remembered for his positive outlook on life, and for the effect he had on his friends.

“He still sparked something in people and that is a gift, and I hope people remember that … I don't want people to forget that,” she said.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is investigating and has so far released little information.

“The investigation continues with regard to the sudden death of Pte. Nadeau. The only thing I could add at this time is that there is no foul play suspected in the death,” said Lt.-Col. Francis Bolduc of the CFNIS.

A celebration of life for Nadeau is scheduled for Friday.
