Monday was a day of sadness for hundreds of people in the Halifax area as friends and families of the city's latest murder victims came together to say farewell.
Funerals for Shakur Jefferies and Terry Izzard took place less than a kilometre apart from each other at about the same time.
Jefferies, 21, was fatally shot on Washmill Lake Drive on Nov. 13. He was laid to rest Mulgrave Park Baptist Church.
"There was a lot of emotion here today,” said Rev. Leo Fletcher. “But very positive emotion.”
Izzard lost his life after answering his door in Uniacke Square just two days after Jefferies.
Several of his friends and family came out to pay their respects.
Carvell Clayton, 21, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Jefferies. There have been no arrests in Izzard’s death.
Police believe whoever was responsible got the wrong man.
"The homicide investigation of Terry Izzard is ongoing,” said Diane Woodworth of Halifax Regional Police. “We don't have any updates at this time. However, we're looking at or exploring the possibility that Mr. Izzard was not the intended target."
As the services wrapped-up, one Rev. Tracey Grosse of the Cobequid Road United Church focused her message on the young people, urging them to cherish their value and help end the violence.
“No one person can do it by themselves,” said Rev. Grosse. “It's going to take time. But love is patient, so we need to be patient with one another. I do believe that things will get better."
