A church in Victoria Mines, N.S. is still under dispute by two groups in Cape Breton.
St. Alphonsus Church is 99 years old, and has been closed for seven years.
One group, called the St. Alphonsus Preservation Society, wants to see it reopened. They held a rally at the church on Saturday.
Another group hopes to reopen the church, but wants to use it as a non-denomination wedding chapel.
Both groups have a common struggle. The Diocese and the Vatican say it will never be a church ever again.
“We have 60 days to appeal that decision to the Vatican,” says Fred Milley of the Preservation Society. “It goes to a higher level. It goes to the Cardinal.”
Another challenge the society faces is it will have to raise $10,000 in the next two months to pay for the legal costs of the appeal.
