HALIFAX -- A young father who was gunned down while delivering pizza was killed over an earlier dispute with the two men charged in his death, Halifax police alleged Thursday.
Donald Chad Smith, 27, was fatally shot outside a building on Joseph Young Street in Dartmouth on Oct. 23, 2010.
"We believe that the victim was lured to the location where he was shot down," Const. Pierre Bourdages said Thursday.
Randy Desmond Riley, 21, of Dartmouth and Nathan Tremain Johnson, 21, of Cherry Brook, N.S., were arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder.
Both men are known to police, said Bourdages.
He did not know what the alleged dispute was about, but he said the shooting was not related to drugs.
Smith, a father of two, had just started delivering pizzas for a local restaurant. Police have said the pizza was ordered from an outdoor pay phone.
Bourdages declined to say Thursday whether it's believed the two suspects made the call that night, saying it was part of the police investigation.
Police renewed their call for tips related to the murder last October on the second anniversary of the shooting.
"It became a very complex and lengthy investigation," said Bourdages. "We followed numerous leads for almost two 1/2 years."
The case was part of the province's Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program, which offers up to $150,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Bourdages said the arrests were not the result of tips received through the program.
A 26-year-old man who used to live in Dartmouth was also arrested on Wednesday outside of the province, but he was released without charges.
Bourdages said no more charges or arrests were anticipated.
