A Halifax woman has turned to Kijiji in the hopes of finding her birth father, but her journey hasn’t been an easy one.
Emily Young was adopted at birth and has always been curious about her birth parents.
“I guess when I got into my teenage years I learned more about them, decided I wanted to meet them,” she says.
Now that Young is 19, she is allowed to access her adoption records. She was able to track down her birth mother and while they haven’t met, they have chatted on social media.
But when Young asked about her birth father, she says her birth mother refused to tell her anything about him.
“I know he doesn't know I am here, so I feel like it would give him, like it would give me a peace of mind, just to know that he knows,” says Young.
Young’s parents say they support her search and that finding her father could help her in the long term.
“I think, for one thing, for health reasons, she’s had a couple of challenges,” says Young’s adoptive mother Edwina.
“My understanding is that the birth father was not aware of Emily.”
The adoption records provided very little information about her father, so she turned to Kijiji in the hopes of reaching out to him.
“I know he's pretty tall, about six-foot-one, might have graduated with a business degree in 1995, worked at a retail store,” says Young.
She also knows he was born in Halifax in May 1972, but without a name, she is at a dead end. She hopes the ad she placed on Kijiji will help her find some answers.
“If maybe someone else knew something and if I wrote an ad, I knew they'd probably step up and help me out.”
The ad has about 7,500 views, but Young is still waiting for something that can help link her to her past.
CTV News reached out to Young’s birth mother but she declined to comment on the matter.
