RENOUS, N.B. -- The New Brunswick RCMP are investigating the alleged assault of an inmate at the maximum-security Atlantic Institution in Renous.

Corrections Canada issued a statement saying the inmate required treatment at a local hospital after he was attacked Sunday morning.

The statement offered no details about the inmate, the extent of his injuries or what prompted the assault.

A spokesperson for the prison could not be reached for comment.

The prison says in the statement that assailants have been identified and "appropriate actions" have been taken.

No prison staff or other inmates were injured and Corrections Canada says it is also investigating the incident.
