A Nova Scotia lawyer, and former member of Parliament, is taking legal action to prevent the closure of a Roman Catholic Church in Stellarton, N.S.
The Diocese of Antigonish had planned to close Our Lady of Lourdes Church by the end of the month, due in part to its “poor structural condition.”
Parishioner Roseanne Skoke is asking the courts for an injunction that would prohibit the closure and sale of the property.
Skoke believes parishioners have an equitable interest in the church after more than a century of financial and non-financial contributions.
“I view this as an eviction. This is an eviction of our parishioners, of my parish family that I’ve worshipped with for many years,” she says.
Bishop Brian Dunn has agreed to delay action for a month so the parties can discuss the matter further.
